If you use a softer media(walnuts), I doubt you could impact the original cast texture.
The true-hue shouldn't be impacted by blasting. That's a product of metallurgy, and some level of corrosion.

My guess is if you let your prototypes oxidize for 25yrs they would be more similar in coloration.

Haha good point. Ill pick up some walmut shells. I was also thinking of heating the pedals with the oxy/acetylene torch to see if that speeds up the oxidizing process. We have a 600k damper test machine, rheometers, an instrom but sadly no time chambers at work

Are you referring to the higher portions (circles & border) not being as shiny as OEM? I'd question how much the OEM pedals have worn over the years, introducing more shine than there may have been originally.

That said, the OEM pedals have a deeper texture (the last comparison photo from 2/15 shows this well) which is likely impacting how reflective it appears.

I am refereing to the lower portion (I want to improve the surface finish of all portions but I think the raised portion is closer than the lower portion). If you have any sources for a course (10-30 grit sand) i would be interested. So far this "play sand" is the closest ive found. Ive tried some very coarse sand (no grit or mesh rating) and it was too heavy/big for my sandblaster to shoot.

Thanks for helping us dial in the surface finish on these parts, I am having a great time working on these parts and cant wait to see the finished part!

Shot peening and acid dipping are the two methods I see recommended to mimic a cast surface. If you google search for something like "replicate cast surface aluminum" you get some sparse results. I think you're on the right track with more coarse media, and walnuts may even be worth a shot at very high pressure, IIRC I have heard of people using them to peen stuff(in addition to being used as a soft media at lower pressure).

Good info Narfle,

We have a tank of battery acid (sulfuric acid?) at work that we have used for anodizing aluminum. I will leave the pedal in the acid for a few hours tomorrow and see how it looks. While it is in the tank I will run by the harbor freight and grab some walnut shells to see what that does.

Thanks for the input guys! Very excited about how this part is coming along!

I think soda blasting will do the job on the OEM pedals to make it look like the new one.

I don't know if it would help at all, but I can take pictures of my pedals if you like. My car only has 14,600 miles on it so the pedals should be pretty fresh.

Without one of your pedals to compare in the same picture though, I'm not sure if that helps you--lighting changes everything in a photo, y'know?

As much as it would suck as far as increasing costs go, maybe you can get a new pedal from Mazda?

One more comment--I'm noticing that the vertical spacing of the circles on the OEM-look pedal is larger than on the stock brake and clutch pedal--was there a reason for that? On your wider gas pedal, the spacing is more similar to how it is on the stock pedals.

You are correct the spacing is larger on the OE style pedal. I tried getting them closer together but I just couldnt get the pattern to work out. The geometry of the wide pedal worked out much better!

Oh I get it--not enough room for another row of circles, right? I guess if it was close you could just lengthen the top of the pedal, but again, we are trying to be pretty exact to OEM dimensions, eh? Thanks for the explanation.

Exactly, i have to keep at least 0.0625" between the circles for the tooling to fit and another row didnt work out. Definitely a balancing act trying to get as close to OEM look as possible.

Sideo is prototyping these designs for manufacture, and negotiating/investigating the actual manufacturing costs with machining vendors at projected production volumes.
It's a bit of a dance, but I promise we're close to a real group buy, and real numbers, in that order.

I don't mean to speak for Sideo, but he's excited about providing a quality and reliably produced product to the community at numbers that make sense.
He's put a lot of time and R&D into this, on good faith, at this point.

Well put and thanks for the kind words Narfle.

So I have already gotten some quotes and have a basic idea of pricing but these quotes were for 10 pedals. Now that the list is bigger I am getting some new quotes to try and get a discount. Also I have been spending all my time on R&D so I havent made as mych progress on the business side as I would like. Ill work on getting the vendor license and updated quotes so I can keep everyone in the loop!

Thanks for all the support everyone!

I believe you can EASILY get over 50 people and more. I haven't put my name down yet because I want to see the final product and cost. As mentioned, thanks alot for doing this for us.
