Goopy Performance, New York
I have done some research on having housings resurfaced, and Goopy Performance in NY seemed to be high on the list. I looked over several pictures posted around the web, then called and spoke to Jonathan there several times and found him to be beyond knowledgable and extremely helpful.
Friday before last, the 5th,we sent him a few housings, including 2 FD housings that were scored and an FC T2 housing with an odd carbon track. The housings arrived last Thursday, 11/11. I honestly expected a call saying the FD housings were too scored and they were working on it. I had told the customer to expect a week or two before we would have the housings back.
Following up, I called them this morning to check in and see if thay had had time to get them unpacked and look them over, no answer so I figured they were busy, not a big deal, didnt even leave a message.
Jonathan called me back a bit later in the day to tell me the housings were done and on thier way back to me! The FC housing, the one that had the weird carbon tracking, was actually warped slightly, most likely oveheated, and they were able to correct and save it. Whats more, he would have the parts I had requested ready for shipping pretty soon as well, which really helps timewise getting a build done.
In case your not following, he got the housings on THURSDAY, machined them, and shipped them back the following morning! Unbelievably good service, good pricing, and extremely knowledgable!
I will have the housings back here in hand within a few days and will post pictures of my housings, before and after. For anyone with some slightly scored or otherwise damaged housings or irons I can certianly recommend GOOPY PERFORMANCE!

I recieved the housings today, as promised. They are amazing! I took a bunch of pictures but left the camera at the shop. Will upload to photobucket and post here in the AM.
This may not seem like a big deal, but I deal with machinists almost daily, and generally when they tell you it will be three days, you take it to mean a week and a half, so the turn-around time was a nice surprise.
The true value here is that had the housings had a lot of portwork or time put into them, they would have saved not only the $650 per housing replacement cost, but also the time and $$ spent on the porting.

Ok so here are the "before" pics. Sorry for the crappy photos, I underestimated how reflective the chrome was. You can still get an idea of the scoring.
And here is how the housings were returned to me-
Completely smooth surface with a slight "scuff" to it which should help the seals break in faster. I will post the compression numbers when the motor is assembled, just waiting on the return of the irons and the new parts to be shipped in, then together it goes.
Cheers!

I believe they are "skimmed" some small amount. I did a lot of reading abot resurfacing and a lot of the fears that have been put out regarding the chrome getting too thin, but honestly I heard the same thing for years about honing Porsche Nikasil cylinders. MANY very respected and knowledgable people would never dare do such a thing because they had had a case of liner failure somewhere along the line. Well, I saw a brand new set of 3.8 Andial cylinders completely shed its Nikasil coating, so I do not think a honing process has much to do with it. These days we can take gouged, ovaled, beat to **** cylinders, punch them out, re-line them with Nikasil and they will work perfectly. My take on what is happening at Goopy, JHB, etc is that they are fully aware that housings are not going to get cheaper, and the further Mazda moves away from the 13B wel all know and love the scarcer things are going to get. The 12A housings are already super-scarce. In speaking to Jonathan they are taking the worst, most damaged housings and are working on developing a way to completely recondition virtually any housing, no matter how damaged. No specifics I am aware of, but if I had to guess, knowing Jonathan is a metallurgist, I would say that initially they are working on an economical way to reline the chrome surface, then probably take it further with a Nikasil or similar coating that will wear like iron without literally eating normal apex seals up. This is just a guess though, and what I would be thinking.
All in all I am super happy with these housings. The FD housings I thought were junk are saved and will make someone a motor with great compression and long life.

Also, I am using thier apex seals. Very similar to the ALS seals but instead of being a softer material all the way through and wearingsomewhat quickly, they seem much like Mazda OEM, to have a soft initial bit that wears in and breaks in fast, then a more durable bit that wears really well.
Also, spoke to Jonathan this morning and the last bits I need for the FC t2 motor should be in today, so will update this thread as things progress.

Sure!
I received the last of the parts just before the holiday break. Everything so far has exceeded expectations. If you have not seen the apex seals, I really suggest you take a look at them. I will be posting some pics of the oversized seals along with the standard 2mm seals in the next few days, probably in a new thread regarding the actual build of an engine.
