Unhappy Won't stay running, Surges

Won't stay running, Surges!! HELP
Okay all I am new to this. I got a RX7 this past weekend that the PO could not get running. He towed it and got it to start once. When he had it started it smoked like crazy. Then the next day he went out and it started up but the cat got hot and was red.

I picked it up from him for $100.00, the body is okay and the car as a whole is not bad. I worked on it a little myself this weekend and I can get it to start and run with the choke on. Once the engine is warm it won't stay running at an idle. I can rev it up and it runs but it doesn't rev real quick. If I let it idle it dies, also if I drop the RPM's below 3000 it suges by about 3-400 RPM's.

Please help!!
Also can someone tell me about taking all the smog jumk off??

hmmm

If the CAT was getting red my guess is that it is loaded with crap and needs to be removed...just take it to an exhaust or auto work shop and ask them to take off the cats and replace them with pipe..(also make sure your air-pump is working)

OOPS forgot to add that when I had it running the cat never got red. But I didn't have it running that long.

for wildman4x4nut, i'd still bet on the cats being clogged. so start there ... what year is the car? replace it with a straight pipe or an RB Power Pulse presilencer.

for rotorpower85, i'd need to get more info. you're saying that once it's cold, it idles ... then cuts out when it gets up to temp? does it drive well, and just not idle or does it just not move at all? maybe the oxygen sensor? i'm not sure ...
