Okie Dokie i think i solved your problem. After a quick search, everybody is saying to hook you aftermarket tach (Im assuming youre using aftermarket tach) to the Leading coil.

Surprised none of these 1st gen guys chimed in...

leading or trailing dosnt matter. its not a tach issue. its a distributor/ignitor/coil issue. the tach will read the same off the leading or trailing coil as an early ignition system sparks once per revolution on leading and once per on trailing.
something is causing my ignitors/coils to EACH fire TWICE per revolution.

the car starts, runs and drives just fine, other than with this over active ignition system causing tach issues, and the fact that over time, im going to burn out my coils from overloading them. as well as likely loosing some top end power since the coils dont ever get enough down time to recharge while double firing like this.

im going to completely re-set up the distributor and ignitors from scratch tonight and see what happens. the issue has to be inside the dizzy or ignitors causing something to have a dual signal.

The only way the distributer could be firing twice as fast is if it had some kind of dual reluctor setup.

And if your engine is running fine, your distributor is working fine, your overthinking everything. Like Fuh said, your coils aren't going to fire double unless your reluctor wheel is fudged, and if it was, your engine would run like ***

I'm betting something is wrong with your tach

sooooo.... this is embarrassing...... you are right. my tach is super screwed! i hooked up another tach and its perfect. WTF?! i assumed my $150 autometer tach would be good but apparently its garbage. wow. super fail. i wonder if the tachs circuit board inside got wet at some point.

please lock this thread so i can crawl in a hole and die of shame! haha.

well. at least i know the car is fine, and i REALLY have a good understanding of the ignition system after all that. now to buy another tach.

thanks guys for all your help and putting up with my stupidity!

Glad it was something simple and you were able to figure it out.

Anyone that has spent extensive time building stuff has been through similar situations, there is no shame!

Just sh*tty Autometer parts

now convert that thing to direct Fire " DLIDFIS "

its been covered many differnt ways, but three bosch bim 012( or 024) ignitors and 3 coils of your choice will get you the best spark... night and day differnce. like from .125 joules of energy to over .500!

im excited to see what it does.
