what's happen if 1st gen rev so high and smoke when start?

i have a 84 Gsl SE
every morning i start the car
the engine will rev so high
i did not press the gas pedal at all!
after it rev up it will droped too low that stop the car
i have to start the car for like 3-4 times to get the car going
anyone knows what's going on?
ignition problem? engine problem?

sounds like the high idle is set way too high on the carburetor. get out your FSM and readjust the settings for the high idle throttle positioner.

84 GSL-SE? That should be Fuel-Injected...

It's what's known as an AWS; Accelerate-Warmup Solenoid. Track it down (should be on the Driver's side of the intake manifold [Says "RE-EFI" on it]) disconnect it, and plug both holes it connected to (otherwise it'll not run well at all). If that doesn't fix the problem, then do a full tune-up on it. Search the forums or read a guide on how to do this.
