That's weird, in the the late 80's CARB required all new vehicles sold in California to have some basic OBD capability.

What gives? Were Rotaries exempt?

1988-1995 cars sold in California required OBD (OBD-1), so all US cars in those years have OBD capability. 1996+ cars require OBD-II, which was too expensive for Mazda to justify further importation of the FD to the USA.

There is a small black box next to the battery that says "diagnostics", you need to get yourself a jumper wire, then with the key off use the jumper wire to jump "TEN" to "GND", you can find the pin location under the box lid.

Turn the key to the on position and watch the "MIL" light flash, count the number of times the light flashes. Codes are in single or double digits, in example if the light flashes 5 times then a long pause , then flashes five times again your trouble code is 5, if you get two flashes short pause then six flashes your code is 26.

The code will keep repeating, just remember that the code starts after the long pause.
