What Do You Look For When You Test Drive A 7
Just like any other car.I would say overall driveability, and overall condition. 2nd Gen-Check all switches, another weak link. On rotary powered cars I would definetly go for a compression test. Seals could be well worn, but not noticeable. 2nd Gen-Check exhaust, another high $ item. If you are familiar with RX-7's check for mods, etc. Check for any leaks, etc.
If it's a TT, after purchase, a lot of spending money money may be helpful.
Good Luck

What generation, or better yet, what year/model of RX-7 are considering buying?
Some RX-7 specific things off the top of my head:
- have a compression test done!!!!
- smoothness of idle (if stock)
- excessive exhaust smoking (a bit is normal such as right on start up)
- pay close attention to the coolant temp. Rx-7's have been known to have cooling problems and such.
- ask owner if it's ever been overheated
- check condition of exhaust system (rotaries wear out systems faster than msot cars due to 1700 deg. EGT's)

Wind it up in first then let out of it and look for smoke(oil seals). How well it starts hot(compression). Quick shifts between gears, especially 1st-2nd and 2nd-3rd(syncros). Accelerate hard and hold it in 4th or 5th to check for clutch slippage. Listen for rear end noise.
