What did I do? Checking timing.

I've been trying to adjust my timing, but I can't seem to get it right.(L1 was on the left mark, T1 was farther left on no mark). So I pulled out the CAS trying to make sure it was lined up properly, but I assume I misunderstood the directions, and reinserted it and plugged it in. L1 was then on the rightmost mark(this is what I understood to be correct), on T1 I had to push the magnet against the wire to get the light to flash and it was spastic so I couldn't get a reading.
It sounds like this now... Help.

I tried re-aligning the CAS again, I didn't take the cover off last time to make sure it stayed in position, and it sounds and runs worse. Rpms now pulse and there is an odd sound in the engine bay. Considering it ran fine, just idled high, before messing with it I would assume I really screwed the pooch on this one. How bad does it sound(from an experienced ear)?
