WANTED: Pictures of Engine/Transmission
Hey Everybody,
I'm still trying to figure out what I'm going to do for my project car. Here's my current idea: Mate a turbo rotary engine to a Subaru AWD transmission and drivetrain and mount it all on a CRX. The Subaru Boxer engine and the rotary engine both have center drivelines, so it could quite possibly work. I know it sounds pretty insane, but imagine that beast on the autocross. So this is what I need from you guys:
1. Pictures of where your rotary engine mates to the transmission or pictures of your transmission where it mates to the engine. Hopefully some of you guys took pictures during your rebuilds etc.
2. Just a quick blurb telling me which direction the crankshaft turns.
I really don't care what engine or transmission it is, just tell me so I'll know what I'm looking at. In fact, the more the better so I can see the little differences and stuff on all the different models. Uhmm, any technical advice you could possibly offer me would be greatly appreciated too, though I doubt anybody has gone and tried to do this. As always, thank you very much.

Check with the Kennedy Engineered(web site). They are the company for engine swap adapters, etc. Their catalog is worth the price. I've just done a TurboII to a highly modified VW trans in my '78 kelmark(kit car).
Kennedy says that for a price($$$) they will build any adapter, but they have a lot of parts for swaps that they have done before(they also give you a lot of advice on the swap when you buy their parts.)Let me know if you need any more info, after this swap I'm on a first name($$$$) bases with a lot of parts places for this swap.

that is a pic of a 12a transmission on the right.. all rotory motor of late have the same bolt up pattern, so i hope this helps you out..

Two notes I'd like for ya to know...
The Subaru transmission is heavy. It probably weighs more than a 12A. I threw my back out picking my spare Subaru tranny out of the hatch of my '80 to put it in the garage. I'd estimate 250lb easy.
The 12A is pretty heavy as well. (13Bs are only worse) They're small but they're VERY dense.
You will have to extend the nose of the CRX a lot. A *lot*. The setup would put the front pulleys probably in front of the front bumper. The Subaru transmission puts the bellhousing face almost a foot in front of the front axle output shafts (which MUST be inline with the hubs give or take maybe an inch) and the 12A is actually a fairly long engine. (Subarus have longer noses than Hondas because the entire engine is between the bumper and front wheels)
The steering will also need reworked, as the rack is in the way of the transmission, unless you mount the engine very high up.
Nobody makes a rotary to Subaru adapter. The bellhousings bolt patterns have nothing in common, and the depths are way different. I have heard of ONE person who managed to stuff a rotary in a Subaru, but he had to have a large, heavy casting made and machined = lots of $$$, time, hassle, and $$$.
I think you'd probably be better off just buying a Subaru and instead of putting a rotary in it, just modding the Subaru engine. They're tough little buggers.
