turbo II & 2nd bell housing
turbo II & 2nd bell housing
the bridged ported 3rd gen engine is ready to be installed. thats after several week of waiting for misc parts to get polished. here's the specs: 3rd gen engine except for the rotors (we used the gsl-se rotors instead), hurley seals, hardened gears, 3rd gen 19 lbs flywheel and etc etc. now the problem, i cant match the engine using the 1st gens and cosmo trannies. according to my sources, i can use either a 3rd gen tranny or a turbo II tranny. i can get either one for $250-$300 each. but i prefer to go the cheaper route. does the turbo II and 2nd gen tranny's have the same bell housings?
thanks

I don't think the 3rd-gen flywheel is compatible with the T2 clutch, so you'd have to use the 3rd-gen transmission and clutch. (Might be wrong)
I don't understand what you mean by "do turbo II's and 2nd-gens have the same bellhousing".

there are 4 bellhousing bolt patterns
67-73
73 rx3
74-02
89-02 automatic
the old style is very different and wont work with anything else, but the 74+ up ones are all the same (the a/t starter leaves one bolt different)
the fd clutch is different, and to use it you need the fd tranny. did you rebalance the motor? the gsl-se rotors wont balance to that flywheel, stock to stock

The FC bell housing is longer.  The FC trans input shaft is longer.
The FD bell housing is shorter.  The FD input shaft is shorter.
It really depends on the flywheel, as the stock FD runs a pull-type clutch which is not compatible with the FC trans, which uses a typical push-type clutch.

I may be off about the mateing of the 1st gen trans to the 3rd gen motor but is the clutch disc a first gen one? If I am not mistaken, one of the things differant between the 1st gen and 2nd gen turbo II trans is the out put shaft. 1st gen has 22 teeth and the turbo II trans has 23 teeth. (spline) I have a 1st gen trans on my turbo II motor with the 1st gen clutch disc.
When you get the 3rd gen motor mated to A trans please advise, I am thinking of upgrading my motor to a 3rd gen also..

you can physically bolt a 1st-gen trans to an FD engine but you need an N/A sized flywheel (use stock '89-91 N/A flywheel or foly lightweight N/A flywheel to stock counterweight) but why would you do that, 1st-gen trannies are weak enough as it is.
