Transmission question

Ok First I am putting a 13b into a 77 Celica.
The problem is the transmission is 9 inches longer then Toyotas.

What I need is for the shifter to be 4"forward.

Has anyone ever shortened/cut the shift rod assm on top of the trans?

What about replacing the tailshaft with one off a 79 If I remember correctly
arent they further forward then newer trans?

I cant really move the trans back further because I start getting into bracing
which I dont want to cut. And I dont want to move the motor forward
because I am trying to keep weight toward the middle.

Thanks
Aaron

you can either use a different transmission or move the engine forward...
I don't know if there are any other solutions...

Well I am just trying to look at all possibilities before I start cutting and welding and put the motor further forwrd then I wanted only to find out later I could have done something else.

Just trying to "think out of the box"

HAs anyone been into the trans that can tell me if its possible

Anyone know if the Rx4, truck trans have the shifter forward or back been along time I cant remember.

The 79 and 80 trans do have a shorter shift tail, is betwen 4 to 6 inches shorter. Good luck with you're proyect.

yes, i have shortened what was needed to put an '83 tranny into an rx3, moving the shifter forward approx 4". i had access to a milling machine at the time since u have to be precise when redrilling and tapping the hole for the bolt that retains the piece that the little ball at the end of the shifter sits in. the easiest way would be to just swap out the tail shaft housing and shifter rod from a 79-80 tranny.

Thanks rxtasy I have a full machind shop at my disposal. You wouldnt by any chance have a pic of your tranny would ya?

I did pick up a 79 last night I havent compared the 2 yet hopefully I can swap the tails easliy. But I will just use the 79 till it blows I guess then change it. In the mean time I can be machining the other trans.

I now have 3 trannys 79, 83,86 should be able to do something. LOL
