The timing marks on the main crank pulley are worn? If you can't see the color of the mark, you should still be able to see the indentation where the marks are. If you install the pulley, the first mark (when rotating the pulley clockwise as seen from standing at the front of the car) is the leading mark and the next mark is the rear timing mark. You can get some paint, a marker, or fingernail polish to mark these again to make them easier to see under a timing light.
*** for the back fire, I can only guess what would have caused it, but it could possibly be related to the misaligned timing of the engine.
