ok my car overheats soo i thought maybe the thermostat was gone on it so i pulled it out and ran it with out one the temp was just fine!! so i go down to lordco and get a new thermostat and i put it in and my car overhaeted soo should i just pull the damn thing out or should i get this sort of thing fixed properly??? I HOPE ITS NOT A SIGHN FROM THE ROTARY DEVIL!!!! I just bought this car and dont want a rebuild quite yet

I've never had any problems running one without a thermostat in it. Just takes longer for it to get warm enough in the winter for the heat to work.

You need to use a Mazda brand thermostat. The other brands don't work correctly. Be sure to install the thermostat with the jiggle pin "up", as per the Factory Service Manual.

Running the engine without a thermostat is a very bad idea. RX-7 race cars have a special plug installed so that they can run without a thermostat.

There is an internal bypass in the W/P housing to circulate coolant until the thermostat is fully open. You can plug this with a 1/2" pipe plug, it's the hole straight down from where the thermostat sits... If you plug it you'll still need a restrictor where the thermostat was. I buy my thermostats at AutoZone, they work fine. Yes, you do have to put them in the right way...all the junk goes on the bottom. 2nd and 3rd gen you'll need to "bleed" the cooling system after you open it. If it still runs too hot I'd check the temp gauge and sender... It's rare to have one good bad but it does happen.
