stupid fuel pump question

i have a stupid dumb question. if there no fuel in my fuel tank, will the fuel pump run? mine coughs and splatters when there is no fuel in the tank, but when i took it out and ran a 12v source through it, it continually ran. also, rx4 mazda, where is the fuel tank fuse? thanks !

A pump will run whenever there is a 12v source. In car / out of car doesn't matter. The fuel in the tank actually cools the pump however, so running with no fuel can overheat it. I would assume the fuse (if it has one) is with the rest of them. You can find RX-4 manuals here: http://foxed.ca/foxed/index.php?page=rx7manual#rx4.

thanks for your help, it seems to cough and splutter when i hook up a 12v source. but then when i plug it into the position it is in the car, next to tank with negative connected to chassis and postive to some 12v source, it also coughs and splutters but not as often. i think it has to do with the terminals on it, so tomorrow ill put some new ones on, also ill find where the fuse relay has been put if it has one (in japan, people are known to forget whole parts of cars in restoration and pretend nothing happened). i replaced the fuse in the fuse box but looking at the diagram there may be another fuse somewhere.
