hey, as the title says my starter will click but will not start. I have read the other posts and mine is different. It will eventually start if i keep turning it off and on. It does it more often in the mornings when it is cold outside and has never been much of a problem. I wasn't all that worried until this morning when it did it about 7 times and then finally cranked over. It is a second gen 86 N/A. I assume it isn't an electrical connection although the battery connections are tight. I do not have to beat on the starter for it to work but i don't want it to get to that condition.

Also after i start it the first time it always starts in the first try unless i havent drove it or started it for a while. Sometimes it doesnt click then.

provided the bat cables are clean and tight, it could be in the switch, but normally this is a starter problem. either the solenoid or a dead spot in the windings, and the usual remedy is just to replace the starter.

 

It could be the starter as stated, but I'd clean all the connections first before replacing it. Clean both ends of both cable and the middle of the - cable where it bolts to the inner fender. Also the wire from the ignition at the starter and the ground wire from the firewall to the top rear of the keg.

The OEM cables are aluminum and have a tendency to corrode under the sheathing right at the ends.

 

Thank you both for all the info. I was thinking it wasn't the starter solenoid because I don't have to beat it to get it going again so if it continues I will clean the connections, and possibly check the wires for resistance to see if it gives a constant reading. I just wanted to check to make sure it's not something major that could get worse. Again thanks for the information and if anyone else has a solution to this problem I would be happy to hear it.

 

Check what's been suggested already: battery cable connections, starter solenoid signal wire, etc... Since adding a relay to pull power directly from the main fuse box, the starter spins every time.

 

It's your cables or the connection at the starter. Trust me on this.

Replacing the battery cables with heavy gauge copper cables is a very good idea. This seems to solve 90% of the electrical gremlins these cars develop over the years. Costs under $30.00, and will save you a lifetime of troubleshooting...
