RX7, pro's to buying one
RX7, pro's to buying one
Hi all,
I am new to this, so please excuse my "stupidity", but I am a fast learner.
I have the Jap car bug, I am interested in an RX7 due to the gorgeous looks, performance, handling and price. But on the cons, I see high running costs (fuel + insurance), regular expensive engine rebuilds, and less tunable than som other jap motors.
Should I be put off by these?
For a basic hobby-ist mechanic, how hard is it to rebuild to Wankel?
Chris

good luck, happy hunting, cheerio, whatever.
Nah, just cuz you can't mod 7's all that frequently (like you could with say a Honda or Nissan) they make up for it in being really fun to drive. High revving rotary engines sound great and really give an exciting feel to the driver behind the wheel, at least if you ask me. Rebuilds are not something you have to do every 6 months :P A rebuilt engine (since you seem to be enthusiastic about trying a rebuild) will (providing its done right) last you quite a while and give you great performance to boot.
(goes to start his 7)
So where was I. I'm a second gen owner, and haven't had any problems with my car (since I got it) that would take it off the road. IMO, FC's are the best model to start with, they've got decent power and are fairly reliable for a much cheaper price than an FD. A Turbo II is a great bang for your buck, but the NA's at 146/160 HP are also quite peppy. Compare the price (at least around here) to other cars, such as much weaker Civics and overpriced Integras, and you see what a value the RX-7 really is. Plus, I think being a rotary owner sets you apart from everyone else, which is always good
Lastly, check the forum for the generation you wish to buy, and you can see many different types of mods that you could try since you seem to be into tuning. May give you some ideas and further push you towards becoming a 7 driver. You know what they say... "the seven can't lose!"
