So the door to the AFM is not open too much? Other possible causes is the throttle cable is too tight or perhaps the fast idle cam is not releasing and causing the primary throttle plate to stay open too much or the throttle plates are stuck open. W/the engine idling you can try pressing upwards on the throttle linkage in front of the throttlebody near where the TPS is located. This should cause the idle to drop.

Replace ALL vacuum lines.

If your using old intake gaskets, replace them.

Thermowax could be stuck...maybe

Pull throttle body a(or just the plastic elbow) and look at the butterflies, they should be closed

Remove your throttle body. Thermowax sensor is on the back (facing the fire wall) theres 3 or 4 screws for it. Carefull not to strip them since they are litterally screws...phillips/flat head screws. Why mazda choose it that way beats me. But if you do strip them youll have to drill off the screw heads off. Then its off.

Replacing it isnt a big deal and another option is removing it all together. But at this point youre modifying the throttle body and i think theres lots of info here about it here.
