Rebuild time close

My car has approximatly 150 maybe 160 thousand miles on the motor. I was going to do a compression check but screw it. It doesnt start so easy when its warm. When its cold it doesnt want to run. Its idle is a bit erratic. I thought it was injectors (wishful thinking) but after careful consideration (and the quest for more power) I feel a rebuild should be carried out before damage is done.
I want to rebuild and port the motor myself. I've been studying these motors for some time now and I think its time I went deeper into one. I'm a wiz with a dremel tool so the porting part I dont feel I should have a problem with. Can anyone give me a quick run down on what I should buy and the best place to get it. That I know of I will need : gasket kit, apex seals, main seals, am I missing anything? I know I'll probably be looking at about 1200 for all the stuff I need. Or should it be more or less? I really wanna do this so any experience from those who have went through this is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Well, I tore mine down in 2 hours once it was out. Actually, once you are down to the block it is even faster

Just make sure to examine things carefully and make sure you have a Factory Service Manual (FSM). Other than that some feeler gauges would be good I guess.
