Rebuild Kit Questions

I need to get a rebuild kit for my '94 13b soon and was wondering how many different kits are out there and which ones are good. I am looking at the Atkins Rotary Rebuild kits because they come with everything (3mm apex seals and bearings, etc.) is there anything else I need to rebuild my engine if u know right away or else ill have to find out as i go along. Is there much difference from one companies apex seals to the next? how do tell? is there anything special about any other seals or gaskets or springs that would be good to know? This is the next thing im waiting on to continue the rebuild. thnx

Have you used both? i cant figure out which one is more complete. also i want 3mm apex seals so does that rule out the kit from rotary aviation? also are the 3mm apex seals from atkins rotary good? do different companies use different materials for their apex seals?

I'm using 2mm seals and the Rotary Aviation kit.

Do your rotors need milling to repair damage? If not, I would recommend staying with 2mm.

You're going through the exact same comparison that I am. The Rotary Aviation kit is the same as that from Rotary Resources (http://www.rotaryresources.com) (run by rotary expert Bruce Turrentine). It has some items that the Atkins kit doesn't, and the Atkins kit has some items that the RA/RR kit doesn't. I've started making a list and costing out the parts to see which kit is actually a better value, but my guess it that they're going to be about even.

I'm also going to get prices on all the Mazda original parts to see how that compares. I really won't be the least bit surprised if the Mazda prices actually come out lower. Especially considering RA wants $70 US to ship to me in Canada!

Try http://www.rotorsportsracing.com/
They have the best kit , compleate with all the best parts , including some parts of the Rx-8 inside the kit , you need to buy the intake gasket and the ex one. And with a actualisation manual , where is the explication of the upgrades.
You can but the 3mm or the 2mm kit

I will try to put all my data into some kind of cohesive format that I can post here, but the results are basically that's it's a wash. The Atkins kit + gaskets is roughly equal in price to the RotorSport kit + gaskets which is roughly equal to buying all the seperate items from Mazda (using Mazdatrix prices). The Rotary Resources kit does appear to be a couple of hundred dollars less, but their installation gasket set is so much cheaper then the others that I suspect it may be missing some items.

The Rotary Resources kit has some items that the Atkins kit doesn't, and vice versa, but these items are not very expensive and the value is about the same on either side of the ledger.

For me at least, this give me every reason to use only Mazda original parts. After all, they got me to 200,000KM, so they can't be that bad

Well, I just got prices from my local dealer, and that is absolutely the best way for me to go. My entire grocery list of parts is going to run about $1300CDN, plus taxes. That's right...that's the Canadian price! Equals about $1070 USD, and this includes all the parts from the Atkins kit, PLUS all the parts from the Rotary Resources/Rotary Aviation kit, plus the full installation gasket set. Here's the list of parts I'm looking at:

Thrust bearing: 0813-11-505B (2)
Rotor Oil Control Ring: 8871-23-180 (4)
Rotor Oil Seal O-Ring Small Inner: 0820-11-341 (4)

Oil Control Ring Spring - Rear Outer: 1011-11-363A (2)
Rear Main Oil Seal: 1668-10-556A (1)
Front Main Oil Seal: 0820-10-605 (1)
Corner Seals w/plugs: N326-11-C20A (12)
Corner Seal Springs: 1202-11-323A (12)

Rotor Bearings: 1011-11-111 (2)
