Im rebuilding my 93 13BREW. It broke a tiny 1mm piece of apex seal off and made a few tiny less than 1mm wide pit marks on the rotor face. On top of that, when I bead blasted and wire wheeled the rotors, I took off most of that soft material on the edges of the rotors next to the side seal grooves. Can anybody tell me what that soft material is for?? and If my rotors are re-usable??? Appreciate any help thanks!!!

You got pics of the damage?
If the damage is NOT anywhere near the apex seal grooves OR anywhere on the "edges" of the rotor face, then you can reuse them.&nbsp If the gouges produced sharp edges in the metal, it might be smart to grind down the sharp edges to minimize possible detonation initiation.

I've reused several rotors with some little nicks in them due to apex seal destruction. If there is damage anywhere near a corner seal or apex seal you should make SURE 100% that you repair it before you put the car back together. You don't want a seal sticking due to a little rotor damage. Also as Ted said, you should smooth down any sharp edges around the damage just a bit to try to minimize chances for a hot spot to be created.

What about that soft material coating on the side edges of the rotors just outside of the side seal grooves? I believe Ted said it was for oil retention?? What exactly does it do? And is it ok to re-use the rotors if I removed most of the coating??

 

Like I said oil retention - the soft coating kinda soaks up the oil so you get better lubrication.&nbsp Although Mazda makes a big fuss about those soft coatings, I've seen pristine cleaned rotors (bead blasted, etc.) run with no oil lubrication problems.

check all your grooves to make sure they are within spec, especially the apex seal grooves as they are easy to mess up without noticing.
