Is there a cheap chemical test that can be performed at home to detect the presence of antifreeze on a swab taken from the lip of the exhaust pipe?

There are test strips you can dip in the coolant to detect exhaust gases.

 

That's a damn good question. A quick way to test for a failed coolant seal.

Yes, but would you smell a little tiny leak? How much exhaust fumes would you have to inhale to detect a small one?

No small leaks? Ha. I wouldn't count anything out. The swab would be for the truely ****-retentive. Or for testing a car before buying.

Or would the swab detect old residue? What if the engine was just rebuilt?

hydrocarbons and misfires burn your eyes. coolant is sweet and kinda tastes like coolaid

 

This thread is retarded, the coolant test strips are a quick easy way to determine if you have a bad seal, they've been around for awhile.

How about using those dye kits in the coolant and stuff the UV lamp into the tailpipe?
