Punch out a rotary?

When your piston drivin engine becomes too old I know you can punch out the block and add larger pistons, but how would you rebuild a rotary? can you punch it out and add a larger rotor?

No, look for rotary engines on howstuffworks.com or rotaryenginesillustrated.com and it will be very obvious to you why you cant do that.
If something becomes damaged it has to be replaced in most cases.

If you want more displacement from a rotary get a big block of rotaries. A 20B.

to "rebore" a rotary, you'd need bigger rotors (custom-made, cos they don't exist!) and you'd have to get the inside faces of the housings machined and then re-plated.

That's even if theres anything on the housings to take-away (which I seriously doubt)

Well I wasn't thinking as far as a large project I was just thinking it might commonly be done, but I guess not.

if we wanna get into it...
new e-shaft, rotors, and rotor housings.

this would probably only work well with an RE because i don't think the ports are large enough on any of the other motors to saturate the new larger combustion chamber..

anyone hear the rumors about either a 1.5 or 1.6 reni motor? i'd like to see that take shape!!

Probably never. The fact that the Renesis was based on the 13B and that the 12A and 13B have been the only really viable production rotary engines should tell you that there were probably problems with the 15A and 21/22A. Probably related to the combustion chamber size, more than likely.

Increasing the size of the rotor increases the distance the flame front has to travel, unlike in a piston engine where increasing the bore diameter results in an relatively insignificant change.

I just read that the 15A and 21A which were developed in 1972-1973 were killed because of the oil crisis. The only 22A was only produced on paper, apparently.

Another cool picture...
