Problems with new clutch
I just paid $1200 CDN to replace my clutch and a diff seal/flange (which mysterously were causing a diff fluid leak last time I got my car back from him).
I need to know why the hell my car is making weird sounds now.
At idle, with the clutch released, I hear a bad sound like grinding around my transmission (only closer to the engine).
My third gear is now making whining noises.
These were NOT like this when I brought him the car to do work
The haynes manual says possible "damaged clutch release bearing" which was just replaced with a new one...
There is a REALLY bad sound like grinding in fourth gear, and a lesser but still BAD sound like grinding in all gears...
I am going to go talk to the guy tommorow about it and take him for a ride in my car and tell him that it WAS NOT like that when I brought it there, which I know for a fact that it wasn't.
But I need advice...is the clutch supposed to make bad sounds in the transmission and such like that while breaking it in? I don't want to screw anything up...

If the clutch is released (pedal in) and you hear grinding it is either the release bearing or the pilot bearing. The pilot bearing is a very small roller bearing in the back of the eccentric shaft that receives the input shaft from the tranny.
As for grinding gears while shifting, I would make sure the clutch is completely realeasing. If it is, the cause is internal to the tranny. I don't see how replacing the clutch could cause internal damage to the tranny. Good luck.

Is it a grinding noise, or a whining. (there is a difference) I just replaced the clutch on my 944 and had no problems. If it is pretty quiet it can be a number of things, such as: throwout bearing, (sometimes) the driveshaft U's, or possibly the tranny.
Does it only happen in 3rd? at certain rpm's? Both noises from the front or back?
The idle one is probably a bearing problem. Also, what kind of parts did you use?

Couple of years ago when I had a clutch replaced, it would get noisy if I let off the clutch pedal. That is caused by the throwout bearing and yes there is a break in period for it and it also depends on the quality of the bearing. I swapped mine with a nylon or a UHMW one (can't remember which) and it made it quieter. I just had the clutch replaced on my 88-n/a today and coming home it seemed like it would fall in all the gears fine except the third. There is a slight grind when I put it in third. Mechanic swears it is a worn synchro but it was not noticeable before today. So yeah, I am wondering if i should give it a day or two before I drain/refill tranny.
