Problem and can't figure it out

OK, here is the deal. Bought a 1st gen. It would not start so I push started it. Once it started it ran up to 2k and stayed there even after 2-3 mins. Even then the car had no real power (like a clogged cat) but was running smooth not shaking like a bad apex.

I got the car home (tow) and did the following. Checked spark, fuel, and removed the exhaust and visually checked the apex seals. Everything good so I then changed the plugs and did a oil change. Still will not run, but does fire up. I was thinking carb, so I pulled it and swapped it with one I had. Same problem. So I decided to line up the timing marks thinking that it jumped time somehow, well the same problem. She will fire up run for 5 seconds and then die.

Now I am stuck. Could it be the fuel pump is weak? You would think both carbs would not do the same thing if it was a carb problem.

Also my manual don't say so who can tell me what cable goes to what part of the carb? I have 4 cables gsl model. There is a cable on top and then 3 down below (one close to the firewall, one close to the rad, and then one in the middle of them.

Thanks for the help. Hope to get it up and on the road.

The fuel pump is weak from the factory. Change the fuel filter. 1st-gens with the factory pump need the fuel filters changed on a very regular basis, again because the factory fuel pump is a POS that barely has enough volume for rated power and it only gets worse. If that solves it, you're golden, just change that filter at every oil change. (It's only $2 or so)

Clogged fuel lines are becoming not-uncommon items as well. So are clogged passages in the carb between the fuel inlet and the needle seats, but you swapped the carbs so in theory this eliminates that as a problem. (Unless BOTH carbs are clogged) Check fuel lines by disconnecting them at the carb and blowing through them, a simple yet tasty way to do it.

Since it's a good idea to get a better fuel pump anyway, replace it. The "low pressure" Purolator pump from Murrays/Autozone/Advance Auto works well enough. I was running low 15's with one. Next time I install one I am putting it underhood instead of under the driver's seat, they can be pretty loud, plus I have had one fuel pump die from getting hit by debris, and another die after water in the fuel collected in the lowest point in the fuel system (the fuel pump) and froze.

As I recall, the choke cable is the one that goes to the top, the hot start assist motor (the thingy on the left strut tower area) and the throttle cable and the cruise control cable all go down below. The cables are "coded" with different shaped ends on the ferrules, so it should not be difficult to get them right, although nevarmore's car was cabled incorrectly by its FPO.

use thick rubber insulation...that will reduce the humming noise.

Thanks, I have changed the filter and I also pulled the line off at the carb and hit the key. The pump seemed to work good since it did put fuel in the gallon jug I had the lines in.
As for the pump I might go to a carter just to know that the pump is good. My problem is that I don't want to hear it click when I hit the key. I had a car that did that and it drove me nuts.

As for the 3 cables on the bottom of the carb I hope someone can tell me which is which to make sure mine are hooked up correctly. Going from front of the car to the rear just tell me cable 1,2 ,3.

That doesn't necessarily mean anything. The original pump from my '80 got so bad that the car couldn't maintain 35mph. I use it as a fluid transfer pump. Works really well to drain the fuel tank - I just disconnect the line at the carb, connect it to the pump, run a hose to a 5 gallon can, and hook it to the battery. But it's not good enough to actually run the car off of. (I've also done this on an FC - yes you can draw fuel through an unpowered in-tank pump just fine!)

Good luck. I'd help you out, but my car is ten miles away and under a foot of snow, and it's really dark out besides. Most people on this forum are of the "rip all that crap out LOL!!!" mentality, too. (There's a damned good reason why I never go into the 1st-gen section anymore, and haven't been in the 2nd-gen section for eons) I'll see if I have time at work tomorrow to dig the car out and see where is what.
