Premixing Oil in my 13B
Premixing Oil in my 13B
I have a street ported and otherwise modified 13B in my Lotus 7 replica Rotus and will be premixing oil instead of using the oil metering system for driving on the street and occasional track days in the future.
Do I have to use snooty, elite, high cost racing two cycle oil or is there a decent two-cycle oil that you can recommend?

Whooa! You're opening that can of worms again?
Here we go. I say no to 2stroke oil. The engine was never designed for it. It is however designed to burn 4stroke oil VIA the OMP. I've heard that the 2stroke oil raised the combustion temps.
Why not just use whatever is going into the crankcase?

If 2 stroke really did raise the combustion temps from, say, 4200 degrees to 4500 degrees (just random numbers in the same ballpark, not actual temps), that would be a great thing for efficiency and power. And if you couldn't tell from the enormous temps we're talking about here, they are almost totally irrelevant to water and housing temps. Not that I actually believe such results are physically possible when gasoline should be better than any oil at it.
Some snooty 2 stroke oils are Idemitsu, AMS and Royal Purple. Reasons are (in order) designed specifically for Rotaries, enough detergents to clean your backyard BBQ of carbon, and lowest friction for slightly better power and mpg. But all 3 provide all of these benefits to some degree.
A real reason to not go 2 stroke is inconvenience and the consequences of forgetting. There are ways to hook up your OMP to a 2 stroke reservoir to overcome this, but then it's dribbled 2 stroke not premixed 2 stroke. Another reason is that while dirty 4 stroke isn't ideal, it's plenty for most.

So many people run premix that to say its bad, or inappropriate, is very very misinformed.
I'm more of a regurgitator than an investigator. I was informed by a thread on ausrotary quite a while ago. I started searching for it and ran into so many threads talking about 2stroke oils that I give up. I would have made me feel a little less stupid if I dug it out though.
I use 2 stroke oil.. some marine crap. I'm not that picky. I have a bad habit of disagreeing with people just to learn more about a topic I think. And I did it and was schooled. Thanks.. I think.
Party on, Garth!

That's fine, but you better be 110% sure that what your regurgitating is correct. Otherwise you will go around spreading misinformation. And that leads to more people spreading misinformation. Which leads to people blowing up their motors based on your misinformation.
Okay, so maybe blowing up their motors is a bit of a stretch...but you get the idea.

Sure you can do both. The objective is to meet the target fuel to oil ratio. Just tailor how much premix you add in comparison to the rates of the mop.
I've done purely mop, purely premix, and both at the same time. Can't say I logged or noted any differences between the three. But I really wasn't going after any hard data in reference to any of the above practices.

In my full race car I run about 100-125:1 of Redline Kart racing 2 stroke. Works quite well and after three seasons of hard running the engine was still pretty clean when it came apart to address a destroyed rear rotor bearing.

I use Amsoil, it is pricy but they make some of the best stuff out there is is recommended by my tuner. I have also used Lucas premix oil and it works pretty well.
I use 8oz. per fill-up.
MMO is just that "Mystery Oil". I tend to buy all of my mystery products when I do my snake oil shopping. MMO is not designed as a pre-mix oil and I recommend that you use a oil that is designed to be premixed with gasoline.

That's funny that you say that, It says on the bottle to be used as premix and to use 4oz with 10 gallons of fuel..
. I use half of its recommended value since i do have a working OMP..http://www.marvelmysteryoil.com/index.php/site/mmo/
