My car has been sitting for awhile and needed a new battery. so i got one and got the motor to turn over. but that it. it just turns over. the gas meter is below empty. could that be it? Spark plugs and plug wires are pretty old too. tell me what you think. Thank you.

Sounds like you've diagnosed your own problems. Put some gas in it, new plugs and wires. Verify that you're getting spark at each plug. Make sure there are no major vacuum leaks. Crank her up.
