noise:pilot bearing & throw out bearing
me and a friend just finished putting my trani back in
we started it up after bolting everything putting everything together
i can hear a wining noise. assuming its the pilot bearing (as i have been told) then when i let off clutch i can hear the throw out bearing. sounds like running water.
these things are brand new bearing!
how can i know if i bent the input shaft aswell
is there a certian noise.
some one said if i stuggled getting the trani out (slave cylinder was in the way and then removed it) that it might bend the imput shaft.
please help.
will the bearings work themselfs out?
i dont see any way i could have fucked them up in the time it took to put it in!

It could be that the new bearing didn't have any grease in it. The easiest way to get a pilot bush out undamaged with the right tools. A grease gun and a drift(rod) that fits neatly into the bush(the same size as the front of the input shaft but lots longer. You fill the hole in the bush with grease until full. Place the rod into the hole of the bush and then thump it with a hammer. The bush will fly straight up the rod undamaged. I always found the best way to get a box out is on a hoist it is twice as quick. The input shaft usually doesn't bend the bush gets damaged. It sounds like dry bearings to me.( I have seen this MANY TIMES) I always place a little grease on the input shaft and where the fork meets the throw out bearing.(nothing to do with the dry bearings)
I also run new bearing on my hands first to see if they are smooth.

Its not the bearings. It's the transmission input shaft bearing, inside the trans. This is why you only hear the whining when the clutch is let out...because that is the only time the trans input shaft spins.
The noise is also sometimes audible in 1st and the bottom of 2nd gears.
IF your trans fluid level and/or type is not up to par you will also get noise.
A pilot bearing will NEVER make noise. IF it were to go out, it could cause shifting problems but that is all.
A throwout bearing that went bad would only make noise when the pedal is pushed in. When the pedal is at rest, the bearing is not touching the pressureplate at all, provided that the pedal is not adjusted into preload. So by definition, the throwout bearing cannot be making noise when the pedal is at rest.

yep. tob does not make noise when pettle is pressed in / at rest. i hear the noise when deceling/foot not on the gas / no throtle/ i hear the running water noise.
i used 30$ worth of royal purple. so i am most certian its not a lack of oil issue. i put a little more then 2 bottls in. each at .98 of a leter. i put about 1/4th of the 3rd bottle in so it was just oozing out of the hole.
the sound of running water for the thow out bearing is not as loud today as it was yesterday.
10-15 miles have been drivin on it in this condition.
<3 thanx for the imput guyz. glad to know some one is here to help diagnose the problem

Well, my pilot bearing made a noise. When the clutch was engaged in nuetral, there was a 'chattering' sound. When the clutch was disengaged, it went away. I know this because I pulled the tranny out, and the only thing that had damage was the pilot bearing, actually, there was pieces of it everywhere. Just my 2 cents.

It most likely was the input shaft shaking around that was making the noise, but the destruction of the pilot bearing DEFINATELY had some relation to the noise. The noise did go away after I replaced the bearing. BTW, I am not trying to take anything away from you (rotartyresurrection), I am just stating my experience.
