New to this board - Probs with my 89 TII

Hey, I just bought an '89 TII from North Carolina. The car is in pretty good shape but has a couple of problems. the engine itself was just replaced last year and only has 20k miles on it. clutch was redone at 56k. there is full documentation of all work done on the car from the *3* previous owners, so i assume all of them really were meticulous about this rx. (they even kept oil change receipts)

I've loved these cars for a while and I'm so damn excited to finally own one.

If anyone has heard of the following issues, please respond or PM me.

1. No electrical current to interior with ignition off. (clock, stereo, lights, all off until key is inserted and turned to the on position)

2. not getting much boost. i'm not sure how much I should be getting, but i think it's supposed to be 7.5psi which equals out to pretty high on the millimeters of mercury gauge. right now it barely goes above 0 (from -20) at full throttle. the guy mentioned that the downpipe is cracked, so maybe i am losing pressure there. when they replaced the engine they couldn't find an OEM one so they just ducttaped the pipe there, so i dunno what that woudl do to my boost levels.

3. the guy i bought the car from said the tps needed to be adjusted. i've read a little on fc3s-pro.com about doing this, but i'm not sure if i really do have a problem. (maybe its related to the boost issue) the only thing i notice is that when the car is cold, it idle's at about 2k rpm but as it warms up, it drops to about 800. not sure if that's supposed to happen or not.

4. the syncros are starting to go in the trans, so i have to double clutch to downshift into 2nd or when upshifting at high acceleration. (i know this cant' be fixed by anything other then a tranny rebuild, but i figured i'd mention it)

5. the remote antenna doesnt work. i'd rather replace it with a standard one anyway, just to not have to worry about it. is there a mazda part i can use for this that will go in without difficulty?

any help is appreciated

for problem #1 i would check the relay that controls power to the interior stuff

#2 - does the car idle ok? when you pop the hood open do u hear a hissing sound? check for vac leaks.
if that is not the case i would pull the TID off and try to see the condition of the blades of the turbo... maybe there is shaft play too... wiggle the wheel left and right and see

#3 - don't touch the TPS... your car is fine... to avoid your car from jumping to 2000 rpm when you start the car and the engine is cold... do the following

Put the car in 1st or reverse... push clutch in like normal... by doing so you bypass the accelerated warm up. Your car is fine... Don't touch the TPS if you don't ahve to...

4- syncros are bad? hrm... can't fix that... try maybe REdline MT-90 synthetic transmissin fluid... i think you will need 3 bottles worht... i can't remember

5 - ya my power antenna doens't work either... if you have an aftermarket radio... you may need a relay... since the stock power antenna is negetive voltage activated vs positve voltage activation... which is what all aftermarket radios use almost.

first thing to do for you is to get a copy of the Factory Service Manual... which is what the 18 to 22 year old kid at hte mazda garage reads to fix your car. Don't take your car to teh dealership btw... the 18/22 year old kid was like 12 years old when your car was made... he/she will have no idea what to do with it

the Factory service manual (FSM) can be found at
www.iluvmyrx7.com
or
fc3s.org <--- better site since it doesn't go down all the time

Congrats on the car... it looks amazing...
your missing the front lip though... just like my...

#1, i'm assuming you checked the fuse.

by the way, nice car. i'd like to swap you motors with my s5 na.

An exhaust leak after the turbo wouldn't affect it's spooling. I would check boost levels with an aftermarket gauge before I worry too much. With the key on but engine off, the factory gauge should read 0, but even then I wouldn't really trust it.

Red Line or other synthetic gearbox fluid does wonders for the synchros. Sounds like yours is pretty bad but it would still help until you can get another one.

Oh yeah, if you ever get a check engine light there is a way to pull the error code yourself to see which component may have failed. Nice feature of the S5s.

Congrats on you find.
