My TII sunroof died

Well, the other day, I hit the button to open my sunroof and it seemed to tilt just fine but it would not go back any further.

When I stopped later, I tried opening it and I realized that the right side opens fine but the left side is stuck totally and therefore the whole sunroof cannot slide back.

Does anyone know why it does this and any resolutions? I have given it a firm smack, but nothing that would break it. I am guessing something is stuck but I dont know. Is this a common problem?

It almost seems like the weatherstripping is stuck on the left side. The motor still whirs if I hold the button and the right side fully opens, but the left side is totally jammed. Any ideas, resolutions?

Please help!

Well, when I had my '89 FC (a long time ago), the sunroof wouldn't open either. Motor was fine, but the tracks were damaged. Mazda was going to charge me over $1000 for new tracks..

I never fixed it. I'm not sure how or why the tracks go bad, but you might try getting some lurbricating oil and squirting it in there to see if it will help.

oNLY way to fix your roof is to remove the track assembly our of the car- disassemble the gliders and the cable, clean it up and lube and reassemble the track. I had the exact same problem and I fixed it by taking the track out of the car. THe left cable may be at a different point than the right or vise versa - causing the sunroof to bind and not open. If you take the sunroof panel off, then remove the headliner and upper plastic trim, it will give you access to the track bolts on the inside of the car. Email me if you need detailed info

Total job time 3 hours to take apart and reassemble into car and 1 hour to clean parts.

Thanks a lot for all the input, guys.

I am going to try applying some grease/wd-40/lubricant in there and hope it unsticks the tracks. If not, it looks like I'm going to have to take the sunroof and mechanisim apart.

Rotaryrosh, thanks for the help. If the lube doesnt work I am going to email you for some specific info.

Thanks!D

Hey rotaryrosh, I fired you off an email.

Well, I tried applying WD-40 liberally on where the tracks are and it did nothing. Man I am upset I just got my T2 Sat.

Well, I guess my weekend project will be taking the sunroof off and getting those tracks right.

Thanks everyone for the help.
