My 84 gsl-se is buring oil faster that I can put it in.

I have an '84 gsl-se w/ 96k miles. Last weekend it started smoking and burning oil like crazy. It burnt through about 4 quarts of oil in 30 miles (I wouldn't have driven that far, but I had to get back to my house). I had to pull off the highway and add oil half way. I'm not sure what's exactly wrong with the engine. Could it be an engine gasket that's gone bad?

Thanks,
Spencer

check the oil pan gasket, the drain plug, the oil cooler connections, the cooler body itself, check for cracked housings (have no clue how that would happen with a stcok SE, but ...), maybe pull the tranny and check the rear main seal.

if nothing pans out to show a leak, then i would think the safest thing would be to pull the motor apart and rebuild. i've never seen (or even heard of) bad oil seals causing a leak of that magnitude, but it makes no sense destroying it due to lack of oil pressure and ******* up parts that may have otherwise been used again.

good luck and let us know your findings.
