miles...
I'm really looking at getting a new car, and i was wondering. How many miles can you put on an rx-7 before your gonna start having problems? I heard somewhere that they can't go as far as standard 4 strokes. Would this be a concern if buying a used rx-7? Thanks
Properly taken care of a Rotary can go just as far as any other high performance engine.
Depending on the version and year and the care or abuse (or lack of) the former owners have inflicted on the car will determine how many miles before work will be needed.
What model are you thinking?
Its pretty routine for non-turbo RX7s to run upwards of 120k miles without any problems. There are a couple I know of that with good care have seen over 200k miles. Since most car manufactures shoot for a goal of a car lasting 100k miles before major work is needed (like an engine or tranny), the rotary/RX7 is right on target.
Turbo cars will have increased performance as well problems due to the added complexity and performance. However it is reasonable to expect 120k+ miles or more from a properly maintained FC and 80k+ miles or so from a FD, without major issues.
Of course there are exceptions to the rule, and I have seen some a few FDs need new trannys or motors before 30k miles, but again IMO proper care and maintence is a key.
