Maybe Moving to NY (Upstate)

Hello All,
I would like to know if anyone on this forum has experience registering highly modified RX-7's in New York. I don't believe my car will ever be able to pass a smog test again in either of our lives. This being the case and the possibility of moving to the state, I would like some information from those who live in the state that may help me in my quest to drive my car in NY if I move there.

Thanks

NY state emissions page http://www.nydmv.state.ny.us/vehsafe.htm#einspect

Guessing by the name FD Dave, I'm going to say you won't qualify for the 25 year rule(I love my SA).

At least your car being pre OBDII they won't hook your car up to any computers so you might pass the visual on the basis that most inspection stations don't see to many FDs so they may have no idea what to be looking for.

With nothing under the hood but an alternator and big turbo, I doubt that I will pass a visual inspection. I may be able to do something under the custom car bit on that web site. I may just end up needing to get a trailer and pickup truck :-)

I think it is stupid to have emission tests. I doubt that any of my cars will pass this, but who knows, I will call the NY DMV and get some more information I think.

All you need is someone on the inside. I just got a shiny new inspection with my 93 R1 , All emissions / cats removed no problem. The FD is a pretty rare car here in NY , if you take it anywheres where the inspection tech is remotley a motor head , he will probally just let you go without too much drama.

Hey dave

I'm upstate as well by syracuse. It depends on how heavily modified your FD is. I do inspections at my school. I could pass you if your a little over but if it's redicuilous I can't. I know a shop downstate that will pass you for 35.

It depends where you're moving to, man. Where I used to live was mad strict, dyno/emissions test. Where I live now it's just a straight safety check.

my buddy works at a shop, and since our cars don't have to worry about passing the OBD II tests that plug into the diagnostic ports, its very easy to pass. as long as my saftey items are working (lights/ brakes/ horn etc) i get a sticker every time. now if you had anything 96+ in NY, THEN you'd be having a harder time........

hey, what part of ny are you moving to? I've got someone in the Norwood/Potsdam area that could hook you up...

I'm over in Plattsburgh, by the way. I'm one of 2 FDs in town. Mine is the only moving one at this point tho...

Hey All, glad to see this post is starting to move.
If the move goes through, I would be moving to the ithica new york area. My car right now, has a GT35R (Soon to be replaced with other turbo), and a complete custom exhaust from the turbo back. Right now, I have a Borla X-1 where the Cat was, and a dynomox 3'in to 2 2.5in outlets, looks sorta stock, but is just a beast on the street.
I am now looking at getting a 3' cat cat to replace the Borla X-1. This should allow me to be close on the emistions side, if needed, I could cut out some of my special custom exhaust pipe and put in 2 of these cats.

My big concern now is that I am running 850 / 1600's and I am just being killed with the Idle AFR (I am seeing 11.0 to 11.3). This is my big concern with passing emitions right now. On top of that, my motor is mildly ported by Gabrial Fontaine (After he first left Pettit).

Next time I put my car on the lift, I will snap some pictures of the exhaust etc.

In NY if your car is a 95 or older it does not require being hooked up to the computer for the smog test. I passed with 3 in turbo back exaust, 850 and 1600 injectors. There are enough shops in NY that will pass you as long as you dont go to a jiffy lube or any place like that. Jay

Yeah, OBD-II was introduced in late 95/96. Some 1995 model years are kind of like a mix of OBD-I and OBD-II, IE not all functions of OBD-II are compliant on a scanner.

And what he said was that all cars 95 and older don't require emissions, unless your in the NY Metro Area. Metro area = Most of lower Westchester, and obviously the five boroughs. Some cities in Upstate NY do require emissions testing I THINK (Syracuse??) but most in the boonies do not.

Rob, eat my butt.

Just an update on this, it sounds like I may be moving to the Ithaca NY area. I would like to have a chance to hook up with some of the RX owners in the area, and if there is any car scene there, I would like to become involved.
I am anxious to run some of the twisty mountain roads that NY and PA have to offer. I also would like to know if anyone has any information on Drag Strips or road courses in the area.
