Installing a 1st gen engine in a 2nd gen car

1988 Rx-7

My old engine broke down and I am considering buying a rebuilt 1st generation engine for my car. I was told that the 1st generation engine doesn't fit perfectly into a 2nd gen car and that some conversion work is required. I still have all the original parts for my car. What needs to be done in order to make the 1st gen engine compatible?

Plenty more than simply buying and fitting another 2nd gen engine. Don't do it!

it is easy to put a second gen motor into a first gen. but the other way around is a lot harder.
