Exclamation I need advice please

Hey guys,

I don't have a 7 although I hoepfully will someday.

Anyways, I do have a 04 RX 8 MT with a custom turbo mounted on the RX8 Greddy turbo exhaust manifold. I am new to rotaries, did all the work so far myself and am learning but slowly.

Here is what happened. Boost controller was not working properly so was taking it easy on the throttle so that i would not over boost until I could figure out what was wrong with it. car was running great though. I pulled out in traffic on day and without thinking got throttle happy. Boost spiked to 8.5 to 9 psi approx which I know is not much compared to you guys but we are all just trying to learn the 8 better. So my fuel map quit at like 7.5 psi, anything above, i am too lean. She made a popping noise three or four times real quick, not sure if a back fire or something else and blew a puff of blackish smoke. it all happened real quick so i let off the throttle and car drove fine. Drove it home as usual about 60 miles an hour for two miles, pulled in the driveway and shut her off to make sure she was okay. Everything looked good except it had blown the hose for the boost gauge loose off the intake manifold nipples. i put that back and started it back up. it went to 3000 rpm and stayed there for a few seconds (like a cold start) then dropped to 1500 rpm, then 2000 rpm, then 1500 rpm, then 2000 rpm and so on.

Moved the car to the garage, cranks up perfect, just idles very erratic. if I press the gas and hold her above 3000 rpm she is as smooth as ever though. Pulled each leading plug and listened for three even puffs. i have three even puffs on each rotor except the rear puffs seem quieter than the front ones.

Was tinkering around with it to see if anything was apparent, pulled the cat, it was falling out in chunks, slapped a high flow cat back on to test it, same problem made no difference.

Do you guys and girls have any suggestions as what to do or what could be the problem? I am a member of RX 8club but there of course are not too many turbo 8s yet and advice is scarce.

Thanks for all your help, I love my rotary and i miss her bad!

Chris

Well, rotaries are really tough, way tougher than non rotar-heads will believe. I seriously doubt you blew the motor or the apex seals. I do know, however, that their are 2 screens in the rx-8 intake. If they are gone or messed up, you get a crappy, erratic idle. Robert with rotaryshack knows a LOT about turbo setups, but he usually works with the 7's.
Good luck
