How I fixed my car: Wouldn't run / no brakes

Well I was driving along late at night and my car decided to stop running properly. I put it in nuetral and the idle was jumping from 100-3000...it was nuts.

Then it stalled. I am thinking "oh great, 3am and my car is broken". So I am just coasting along and decide that it is time to pull over, so I press the brakes....Nope...press harder...nope...

Ok so I have no brakes at this point coasting down the highway in neutral...I decide to press harder and get about 5% normal braking power....good enough.

I come to a stop and pull over with my hazards on. Time to pull out the flashlight and pop the hood. (a few cars stopped to make sure if everything was ok...)

So I dug around a little and couldn't find anything, so I decided to take off the intercooler. (Lucky for me I carry a full tool kit around). Sure enough there is an air hose that goes into the intake manifold that is not clamped and is just hanging there. (The big one on the 89-91 turbos that goes into the intake manifold just a little to the passenger side of the 4 vacuum hoses).

So I poped the hose back on, and bang, fired up first try and brakes worked too. Drove home, jacked up the car, and got a clamp on that little bugger from underneith (no room up top).

Oh well that was my little escapade. A little fun this year already.

Yep your car will die if that happens and run like crap.

Reason being is your "MAF" is out of the loop when an intake hose comes off. Your engine can then no longer tell how much air is coming in and has no way of knowing when to pulse injectors, adjust timing, yada yada yada.

Now for your brakes, turn off your car while driving and it will happen again. Reason on this one is because you have no vacuume. And your brake booster is no longer working. You still have brakes but they are not power brakes so you must use tremendous force to get them to work.
