hood liner. what is the point?

Guys,

I'm trying to determine the point of the hood liner on our cars. I happen to have an FD, but I've got an Impreza as well, and all the other cars I've had have this fabric/mystery material hood liner whose purpose I'm trying to figure out. It's not as if this will save your car from a fire. I was thinking maybe it's a sound dampening thing...I can't quite figure out the real intended purpose to this.

just a guess, but perhaps heat absorption? ... to make it cooler to the touch and less likely to screw up your paint as water vaporizes ...

It's to prevent your map sensor from falling off. Don't remove it.

ah yes, the paint factor. that has to be it, considering the prodigous amounts of heat our little powerplants can produce.

clayne: My map sensor fell off into your mom's gash, so this hoodliner shouldn't matter now. FU

what a wonderful choice of words!! mom's gash huh? it is like the other guys said to absorb heat and draw it away from the hood, helping to save the paint. may have something to do with the fact of an aluminum hood on the TII.

I have read this (I think in a magazine) so take it as a rumor.

The purpose of the hood insulation is for fire supression. The idea is that if you have an engine fire it will melt the plastic hangers and it will fall on top of the motor. That could contain (not extinguish) the flames enough to raise the hood for use of a fire extinguisher.

I think it's mainly for sound. The fire suppression theory sounds good, but the stuff usually burns.
