Thumbs down High HC emission

I failed my emission tests with my recently bought RX-7. HC levels were will over 3500

Judging from my experience from "regular" engines this is a bit too much to be fixed with new spark plugs...

Is it possible to perform a regular compression test in order to see if the apex seals are ok?

Any other ideas? I am used to repairing cars but this is my first "real" (rotary) engine.
