Fuel economy

Hello to everyone I recently replaced my spedometer cable (was not working) in order to see what kind of gas mileage I'm getting. I have an 88 gxl manual 5 spd, and I filled up a full tank of 87 octane arco gas. To my dissatisfaction I only got 125 miles out of it. I drove about half freeway miles half street. Is this normal for an rx7? I sure hope not cause gas is getting frigin expensive. The car runs great, but I did notice that it's idling higher than normal (1k) until I drive through all of the gears a couple of times. What can I do to improve my mileage? What basic things should I be checking? My 74 350 camaro was getting about the same gas mileage and that beast was a 5.7 liter. I know rx7's arent known for good gas mileage, but this bad? Any help on this matter will be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance-----Ren

No, that's pretty poor. If you put in around 15 gal., that's less than 10mpg. OUCH!

They were supposed to get 17/24.

I get 17 - 21 out of my TII.

Things to check:
Timing
Air filter
Plugs & wires
O2 sensor
Tire pressure
**Engine bay fuel leaks (don't drive 'til fixed)
TPS adjusted
Idle adjusted
Pull the codes, water thermo sensor?
No brakes hanging up
Cats in good shape

Hope that helps. Cheers

I was getting poor mileage on the 85GSL I bought a few months ago, then I started the MMO treatment and it's much better. I also added a bottle of Techron to one tank of gas. Car runs better, idles very smooth, and it seems like the mileage improves with every tankful.

MMO might help, because the idle problem suggests crud in the fuel system.

trying doing the ATF trick, to get the gunk loose and get an added compression in your motor. Changing the PLUG and Plug wires help.... O2 sensor was mentioned.... helps ALOT to change it. The water Temp sensor could be it too, leaving your car in a open loop making your car run rich(more fuel being dump)... If anything is clugged up the mileage goes bad... tire pressure too.... adding MMO helps... Redlining it all the time DOESN'T HELP.... change air filter...

My GSL-SE improved from 17 mpg to 18 mpg just by changing the ignition coils to MSD BLASTER 2 coils( I know the second gens have a direct fire, but it doesn't hurt to invest on BRAND NEW ignition COILS)
