fresh rebuild starting tips?

ive got a rebuilt motor im trying to light off...its got use rotor housings so compression isnt that great yet.

ive given it plenty of cranking to build up oil pressure then began trying to get it to fire. it always sounds VERY close, but it just wont catch! ive been toggling my fuel switch, as well as spraying starting fluid.

with the plugs pulled i get nice numerous audible chugs.

my starter started getting hot, and battery weak, so ive given up for tonight.

tomorrow im going to put some MMO in the plug holes and give it some more hell...

it doesnt help that the ECU im using is *** backwards on timing(CAS has to be almost 180 out..)

Use ATF, not MMO. the MMO is a cleaner, you want a lubricant.

Make sure your battery is fully charged or you risk flooding the motor

thanks for the tips guys... ATF did the trick.

now i have more questions

my first concern is my shaky boost gauge needle. any time its under throttle the needle is shaking more than im used to, it happens more as the throttle goes further down.(even in the vacuum range)

is this a new motor thing? or has something not seated properly yet?

also with my timing..when i start to bring my pulley marks anywhere close to normal the engine dies. i dont think my rotors are in there backwards...what's the deal lol. even with this 180 out ECU i could get the timing lined up on the old motor.

ive got 45 miles on the motor now, how long should i expect before i have to stop playing with my fuel switch to get it to catch and start?

rotors cant go in wrong. one way placement. sometimes depending on condition used housings can take anywhere from 1-3k miles to seal right

Don't quote my numbers exactly, but I was told to put about 1000 miles on my rebuild before I started worrying about minor problems.

Mine barely idled, and barely pulled vacuum until something like 200-300 miles!

well the motor runs GREAT and smooth as it revs, so maybe im being too picky. it DOES pull decent vacuum..just a little shakey.

also it actually idles at 900rpm, just shaking like a bitch :P im going to raise it up to 1500 right now.

ill drive it how it is for about 500 miles and see how things go. ill also do a prelim compression test then.

i did plenty of research, but like most things you cant prepare for EVERY variable.

this was my first rebuild, but im quite proud of how it turned out.

Make sure you check your timing. This can cause all kinds of problems if not set right.

yes, i would check the timing and scrutinize your vacuum connections.

thats the thing..my timing is screwy as hell.

its nowhere near being in time yet this is how it runs best.

im going to mess with it some more today, removing the stud so i can swing the CAS a long way without restabbing and see how it runs as i get close to being set...

before it just wanted to stall.

that may mean you're only a tooth (or so) off the mark. did you find TDC by the mark on the pulley or did you place it with the shaft key before installing the pulley? unfortunately, i've found them not to coincide at times.

going by pulley markings. same pulley actually that was on the other running motor. never unbolted the pulley from the piece that fits over the e-shaft.

now ive got a new problem, think it may be a dead primary injector :[
