I was wanting to know how vulnerable the rotary motors are to leaks etc.
I am wondering this as i was told that they are alot more efficient but have a history of things going wrong with them, is this true??????

 

depending on the owner and regular maintenance habits, expereinces can differ. they are sports cars none the less, and are run hard and fast.

Ive seen some runnign with over 200,000 miles, and some fail at 100.

Compared to a piston motor, they don't last as long, but its not rediculous. MY first two eninge lasted about 200,000 kms. a respectable level.

Like I said, with regular maintenance and upkeep they can be a dream.

They are hardly efficient. A 1.3 L displacement piston engine would easily get 2 1/2 times the fuel economy that our rotary engines get-about 20 mpg average.

yup, a 1.3L rotary is the same as a 2.6L piston engine... but turbo shouldn't hurt it too much... it may wear your motor down a little bit faster, but it shouldn't be too significant. they do get a few more problems though.

If you want to talk about HP to Cubic Inch ratios the wankel is much better.

my STOCK 89 vert makes 160 HP from just 80 cubes, thats 2 HP for every cube.
How many stock reciprocating engines can make 2 HP for every cube?

 

a deisel makes about 4-10 ftlbs for every cube. sry that was off topic. Basically a rotory motor is like ne other motor. Keep up on your PM(preventive maintance) service and the car will last a very long time. Plus you dont have to worry about valves and such wearing out just the seals.

When I change my oil I can it 3 time within 100miles just to clean out the crud within the 3k mile oil change. Another thing you can do is run a little water through it to clean out the carbon every so often. Even with an Oil metering system working in my car i still add a little bit of 2cycle to every fill up. Redline the car every now and again and it will be fine. But dont just hold it to the floor and bounce it off the redline. just drive it a little harder everyonce and awhile to release the bad and let in the good. LOL.
