Engine Swap

Hey everyone, just joined the forum today and wanted to say whats up. Anyway, i own an rx8, and unfortunately sum terrible things happened to the engine. I took it to a shop that I should have never done, and as a result they blew my motor! I just turbo'd the car and they melted the vaccume line from the actuator and weren't gettin any boost readings, yet instead of checking for that problem they freakin dyno'd it 40 times!! I have no clue as to how it survived 40 runs without a properly working wastegate, so I'm convinced they are idiots and melted it on like run 38 or 39. Anyway, to make a long story short I either need a rebuild of the Renesis, or I'm also considering doing an older 13b swap from the 3rd gen 7s. I found a 3rd gen twin turbo motor for $2,499, rebuilt and in better than new condition, and was wondering if that price sounds good. As far as I have researched, it is, but I'm sure other people know more than me. Anyway, if I end up with that motor, how much are installation fees when doing an engine swap? If I bought it, plus installation does any1 know about how much that should cost at a reasonable price? Thanks alot.

My question is, why are you even considering this? These guys owe you a new car. An RX-8 is a significant investment, and they blew the hell out of it?! You should not be talkin about puttin an old engine in a beautiful peice of machinery like the RX-8. If these guys don't offer you a new car or, at the very least, a brand-new factory-built Renesis replacement, FOR FREE, then you need to sue them, report them to the local newspapers, and so on. If you can afford an RX-8, you can afford an attorney to take an obvious winning case. First, I would threaten to report them to the Chamber of Commerce, the newspaper, the TV stations and so on, and if they agree to fix your car, get the repairs done at another shop and send them the bill. If they don't agree to fix the car, make good on the threats. You got screwed... you need to make sure it goes both ways.

I know they will claim that you screwed up the engine with your modifications, but that's BS. An RX-8 is at the most 4 years old, is one of the finest automobiles ever built, and should not be suffering from a blown motor under any but the harshest possible racing conditions. IMO, it should have survived being dyno'd 40 times even with a broken turbo, but I can see where a problem might arise.

Also, I would be highly suspect of anyone who uses the term "better-than-new condition". A motor is either new, or it's not. Admittedly there is some break-in time on a new motor, but that's not what they mean, I'm sure. $2499 seems like a good price although you will not be satisfied with the power output of the 13b compared to the Renesis. As for labor cost, it takes a long time to replace a motor, way longer to install a different motor type where it doesn't belong. I have done it one time on a subaru and it took 3 months, with help from my friends. Course I wasn't working all day every day on it, but I would bet that overall it was 80 hours of work or more. A professional mechanic would do it in considerably less time, but it is still going to be a huge amount of money. Seriously, you need to get these guys to buy you a new car.

I'm curious as to why you had this car in the shop in the first place? Was there something wrong with it, or were you having modifications done? I don't think you are telling the whole story here.

regardless of the whole story, stay away from that third gen motor unless emissions and fuel economy are not your problems (if you say yes, i hate you, i really do)

the renesis is the most effecient rotary motor out there, and its suited to your car (and computer control system.. read: expensive) not to mention your mods. not everything is dead on that motor, im sure of that.

now if you want power and can afford to writeoff renesissies like post it notes, then go to www.racingbeat.com and check out their 48,000$ three rotor 1000BHP turbo monster with like a 5" dump pipe on it..

i just got wood.
