Engine stud removal

Can anybody recommend any "hacks" to remove engine studs without a $100 tool? Thanks.

Edit: sorry, not studs, dowels.

Edit edit: Now that I got the search terminology right I found my answer (sort of). I'm just going to buy the MazdaTrix tool. Mods you can delete this post if you like.
