Electrical Charging Short

Once again I fried another alternator. The only thing is that this time when I changed the alternator my car wouldn't start. I checked the battery with my friends DMM and it said 12.8 volts. So I get back in the car, turn the key, then the volts just drop down to about 5-6 volts. I end up jumping my car with my truck and my car seems to run fine. I drove it around for a little while then went home. When I got home I turn off the car and try to start it again, but the result was the same as before. Also when the car was on I turned on my lights and the volt gauge dropped down real fast then came back up. There's a short someplace, but I don't know how to look for it. If someone could tell me how to check for a short or someplace to start it would be greatly appreciated. Oh well...

Peace
