Deflection gauge - how to use?

Can someone give me a rundown on how to use a deflection/dial guage? I just bought one and a mag base to check my irons, but it came with no instructions at all and I've never used one before. I assume these things are pretty standard?

And yes, I'm embarrassed to ask!

just run the magnetic base along the iron with the needle also dragging on the iron and watch the dial. I belive anything over .002" needs lapping. Dont take my word on it.

lapping is nice, but you can get away with a LOT with the irons.
