cooling system problem..need help

I have a 88rx7. Water pump used to leak so I replaced it, now the low coolant light comes on every so often. I check rad and its low but the resorvoir is passed the full mark.so I drive it like that till the thermo opens up and the light goes away (sucks the extra coolant out the tank) but later on it'll come on again and when I check the same thing.
What could cause this..air in the system? The car does not overheat, just low coolant in the rad. But more in the resorvoir.

I thought once the car warms up the thermostat stays open so it runs thru the engine at all times anyway just not before the car is warm. After driving my car for a short ride both my hoses are tight and filled with coolant my resivoir tank is filled completely, way past the full line. I have the heater core bypassed with a piece of hose but it only took about 1 and 1/3 gallons. How much coolant should my car take without a heater core. its a 88 na I have that stupid radiator that you cant fill it has no cap on it just the small pipe that runs to the resivoir tank. How do you perge the air out
