Coolant temps - questions
Hi
i have recently installed a newly rebuilt motor and covered the 1000 miles for good measure at low rpms and boost.
i would just like an opinion on my coolant temps.
i have a koyo rad, greddy FMIC, all nicely ducted from the front bumper including the stock oil collers. i have lowered my fan switch on temps to 85 deg C.
highway cruising - consistent 86-88 deg C (185 - 195 F)
i tried to simulate some track day type driving by cruising on the highway with some short bursts in low gears and often staying in low gears to keep the revs up above 5k rpm for a while..experienced temps upto 97 deg C (207F) before deciding to tap off and allow the motor to cool down to about 90 deg C, which it did with some cruising in 5th gear.
the outside temps here were around 30 deg C (86F)
any comments as to the ranges of temps experienced?
..i had some overheating issues with the old motor, water seals pressurizing the cooling system, so im rather nervous about this whole cooling thing!
thanks
GREG

Personally, I'd lower the fan switch to 180*F. That's where I have mine set, but my aftermarket temp gauge pickup is where the stock pickup used to be. Where are you reading your temp from?
can you recommend a good replacement thermostat to open at a lower temp.
at what temps do these lower ones open at compared to stock?
GREG
You can look for a SARD t-stat but there isn't a real need for it unless you are tracking your car. If you aren't tracking your car, I'd suggest you just leave it well enough alone.
