overheating

i got caught up in some traffic due to an accident on the highway..and notiuced the water temps began to rise rapidly..within about 1 minute it rose from 95C to 115C, so i pulled over and switched the engine off, opened the bonnet to find the small pipe connecting the AST to the overflow plastic bottle had blown off and water and steam was rushing out...

i waited a while for the water and steam to stop, opened the AST and filler neck caps to depressurise the system..after waiting a further short while (15 minutes or so)...i checked the temps on the PFC and they were down to 83C but there was no water near the thermostat anyway...

i had some spare water/coolant mix in the car and topped it up at the filler neck...only after putting it in did i relaise that cold water in a hot engine is not a great idea...yip..i know..pretty stupid from my side ..but i was so freaked out..since ive oly had the new motor in for 1000kms or so.

just thought id ask the forum for comments on what damage i might have done to the motor from the cold water (warping, seals??)...i added roughly 3 litres...after realising my stupidity. ..i hoped that by starting the motor it would circulate the water and normalise the temps..

i have driven the car subsequently and it appears to run okay . any tell tale signs i should look for..??

aside from maybe finding out what happened in the first place, adding the water in itself was the right decision. however, there very well may be something amiss. the best thing was shutting it down before it actually overheated. have the cooling system checked though, losing 3 liters is a big deal and you need to know where it went. check the radiator cap, thermostat and check the coolant for evidence of combustion products.

I did a thorough check over the weekend..didnt find any evidence of leaky pipes/joints..what i did find was that the bolt holding the braket to which the AST is connected wasnt not replaced when the rebuilt motor was put in, causing it to bouce around a bit. the bracket connects to a hole near the right hand headlight. i was also not convinced there was a clamp or cable tie holding the small diameter rubber hose to the AST. these two together probably helped it slip off with a little bit of pressure when the car got hot in the traffic.

checked the T-stat and it seems fine..i took another T-stat and drilled it with 7, 4mm holes to see how that would work out..so far i like it...engine temps staying around the 81C to 88C mark, highest ive seen was 95.

no smoke evident on start up and she starts without hesitiation.

i think for now im quite confident all is okay and i can continue with my 400whp goal..

well at least you were not to high, just drive it and check **** out, if everything is ok then just run with it.
