cleaning my catalytic converter
Take a large screwdriver, or the butt end of a hammer, or an air chisel if you have one, and just bash all the guts out.
I did this on my first pre-cat when it was clogged to the max and my fuel mileage went way up, as well i could feel a slight increase in power.

my car wouldn't start because my no2 pre cat ( or resonator what ever you want to call it ) and my main cat were so clogged. so i cut them off and made my own straight pipe using the flanges off the cats
..... but i must warn you how loud it will be with out the cats. i got pulled over the other day for the first time for the noise lol. but because of my job i didnt get a ticket... and NO im not a cop!!!

WOW - just WOW
It's just a shame your emmision passing ability goes way down as well. But hey, noise and better MPG - YAY!!!!
It good advice though and its about the same way the OP should go about cleaning the gray matter between his ears. Either that or a little soap and water and a small toothbrush should do the job

Depending on if you are emmissions state the above advice would not be recommended.
If your not, take the cat off and take it to a salvage yard. You will get $50+ out of it. Then take that money and treat yourself to a replacement pipe

Dam $50+, I did not know they were up to that now. I need to call my local recycle center tomorrow and see what they are paying out per cat now. I have a few different old cats down at my shop and could use the money.
If your cat isn't too clogged, the water steam cleaning thing with work. I know this for a fact as the orginal cat in my 94 Fd lasted well over 100k with no signs of clogging. I even pulled it off at one point to do an inspection and it was a very very light looking color. I did the water cleaning thing twice a year.
