wutsup guys.. i know the debate on usage of synthetic oils in rotary engines has been going on for so long so i decided to email CASTROL myself and get their opinion on this...take a look...

MY QUESTION:i have heard rumors that running a synthetic
in a
rotary is bad for its health due to the fact that a rotary needs to
burn off
oil cleanly and effectively because it injects oil into the combustion
chamber, where a synthetic oil is made not to burn off, and leaves
residue
behind in a rotary engine and decreases the life of the seals
inside...if u
can help me out..


CASTROL: Thank you for taking the time to clarify this issue with us. To answer
your
question, a number of years ago Mazda evaluated the performance of
synthetic
oils and determined that their characteristics may result in lower
compression pressure or excess oil consumption due to insufficient
lubrication of the seals and the rotor surface. In fact, the
recommendation
against the use of synthetics continues to stand for their RX7 and RX8
rotary engines today.

Although Castrol SYNTEC and SYNTEC Blend have been used successfully in
racing RX7 vehicles with rotary engines, we cannot recommend the use of
Castrol SYNTEC and SYNTEC Blend in Mazda rotary engines, because we
respect
the decision made by Mazda.

This thread on the mrc is well worth reading. Its very in depth and after speaking to oilman at rotorstock convinced me to go fully synthetic, although not the cheep stuff.
We have the same debate going on in the uk and this seams to answer a lot of the questions.

It's a good thing, dino is cheaper and if changed regularly will provide the same level of protection.

Do you have anything to back that comment? I think Castrol makes a great line of oil, dino and synthetic.

It's all preference....
I have used Castrol for many years without any issues on my 7.....
I also have used Mobile 1 full synthetic in my wifes 02 Explorer since the day we purchased it and it has performed flawlessly, and her truck has 110K miles on it...

I use Castrol GTX 10w-30 in the spring and fall and Castrol GTX 20w-50 in the summer in the RX. I like Castrol allot, I use Castrol full synthetic in my Camry and Castrol high mileage in my wife's Oldsmobile.

I think it's funny that people use oils based on preference. I'm not saying that I'm any different but you would figure that with all the tests done between oils that there really is a best and worst oil and that saying one is better then the other over preference is an invalid arguement. Enough of my rant.

I've used Amsoil for the last 2 changes and then blew my turbos. I doubt the two are related but my car ran the same on Amsoil as it did on Castrol. So I'd say for me I'm going to go back to Castrol dino oil cause it's far cheaper then $12 a quart.

I think its great to run synthetic Motor oil on rotary,s of you remove the oil injection and run 2cyl oil. in the gas tank (premix) Iv been doing it for a wile now and theres proof that your housing walls are smoother then running your oil injection because if you look at a used pair of housing u will see that the wall is smoother on some parts were the oil hole is but the rest of that area is rougher.

Sorry, but this study sucks. They didn't pick very common oils to test, and even the ones they did test aren't consistent. They left some of the oils out of the first two tests, and then randomly selected some more to dyno test. It's like they just started testing oils without any prior planning. IMO this is a very poorly performed experiment...

I agree 100%, Castrol GTX is not even in that study and that is what most of us use.

I use castrol Syntec Blend 10-40 or 20-50 for track days.
It's about 20% synthetic and 80% natrual so it does burn off and clean.
I have been using Syntec Blend for 2 years with no smoke or deposits. Compression is fine also.
I use castrol 2-stroke in the gas, about 1\3 a bottle for every full tank.
Still no problems and running strong.

I just wouldn't use full synthetic.

I've used GTX 20w-50 since i got the 7 4 years ago, wouldn't use anything else

I just using the cheapest oil I can find lol. When I get a rebuild though I'll be sure to use conventional valvoline

Best of both worlds. Get the performance of Syn and clean burning of 2 stroke oil. Plus u keep the OMP.

We have designed a system that allows the use of the stock oil metering pump (OMP) to inject premium 2 stroke oil into the engine. Good quality 2 stroke oil is designed to burn clean and properly lubricate the internals of the combustion chamber in ways that far exceed conventional motor oils. This system allows the use of synthetic oils in the oil pan since this oil is no longer being injected into the engine. This kit includes an engine oil supply block off place, an oil fitting for the OMP, an oil line and an oil reservoir.

not sure y either i think it has somthing do with how cakes up in the headgasket?

anybody else notice gtx doesnt seem to leak as much as other oils?

no on the synthetic. i do use gtx though....but the next motor will be premixed....
