I had the exact same problem, it turned out the guys at jiffy lube unplugged my tps(throttle position sensor) when they looked at the air filter, my car would rev to about 2000 then cut out but run fine when it got back down.

In take pickup screen clogging?

Did the old fuel filter looked clogged? When my 85s tank started rusting out inside took a matter of days for the new filter to clog back up.

Could also be the fuel pickup in the tank plugging up. Shutting it off would allow the debris to fall off the pickup and run again till it picked up enough junk again.

See if you can get a gas tank siphon or use the drain plug to check if you have any gunk on the bottom of the tank.

i need some help i've had this problem for a long time know and still cannot figure it out i've put a lot of parts on the car and the problem still persists i believe now the problem is in the ignition timing because it sometimes acts like it is not correct when i crank it up in the mornings and when i give it the gas it dies down and when i let off it revs up high if i have this problem right on i will eventualy give up but i would hate cause i love my car too much
